  Storyline

Doug Harris (Josh Gad) is a lovable but socially awkward groom-to-be with a problem: he has no best man. With less than two weeks to go until he marries the girl of his dreams (Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting), Doug is referred to Jimmy Callahan (Kevin Hart), owner and CEO of Best Man, Inc., a company that provides flattering best men for socially challenged guys in need. What ensues is a hilarious wedding charade as they try to pull off the big con, and an unexpected budding bromance between Doug and his fake best man Jimmy.

Movie Reviews

"The Wedding Ringer" is hilarious and deserves much better reviews than the middling ratings given by many professional critics. It packs a lot of laughs and offers many different levels of humor, from bawdy, risqué jokes to more subtle, poignant material. The filmmakers employ slapstick, pratfalls, one-two-three punches, recurring jokes, sight gags, irony, ridicule, satire, sight gags and other techniques effectively. It has a strong moral, three dimensional characters and several minor subplots. The acting is uniformly excellent, especially by Hart and Gad. Production values are more than adequate.

It's not perfect or as well crafted as "Love Actually," but it's in the same league. The throughline is fairly predictable and there are familiar elements that are similar to elements in "I Love You, Man," "Wedding Crashers," "Hitch" and other comedies, but while they seem familiar, they don't seem derivative.

Some elements are a bit obvious or over-the-top. The fiancée was so controlling and aloof that it's difficult to believe the protagonist would have been so smitten, particularly as she did not seem nearly as physically attractive, intelligent or interesting as her sister. The ringer's groomsmen are all oddballs and misfits. One would think he could find some normal guys among his associates, but it ties in with the moral. The final scene is fun, but it feels as if a few loose ends were left untied and some of the rewards weren't entirely earned.

The secondary romances could have been developed a bit more fully and the filmmakers don't have much going on in the backgrounds of their shots. Some of the material is decidedly politically incorrect and occasionally a bit raunchy, but it's funny. Lawyers love jokes about lawyers. I enjoy jokes about Italians. We should all learn to laugh at the unique qualities that define us, fairly or unfairly, in the perceptions of others.

There is an elongated dance scene that's fun to watch. There are several stylistic variations, but it might have been stronger if they had also changed partners.

The film offers a lot of laughs for a lot of different tastes. Reading some of the reviews, I found that I had completely missed some jokes based on popular culture, so there's more humor than I give it credit for. It's definitely worth watching and probably worth watching a second or third time.
